I first met Hartley while a student at RCC in the late sixties and early seventies. I was introduced to him by Chuck Coutts, his predecessor as President. This was at the time it was transitioning from being part of Teleflex, under the direction of Bob Poulter, to being owned by Chuck and Chris Dobson. Hartley was truly an education professional who provided me with much guidance over the decades. I will miss him.

Hartley was my mentor and friend. He was an amazing listener and cared more about the Career College sector than anyone I know. I learned yesterday from son Blair via Paul Kitchen the sad news of the passsing of a good friend and former colleague who I admired more than a few words can express. He was a huge asset to our work on the NACC board, lending credibility to the industry and influencing regulators. After our working day was complete, he was a fun guy to be with. Joan enjoyed her association with you folks and was happy to have Hartley as a guest at our home in Saskatoon. He will be missed by us all.

Dear Peggy, My heart goes out to you for your loss. It is so sad... I met Hartley after only five years in Canada. I hoped one day I would have the opportunity to tell him how he influenced my understanding of Canadian life... I remember our conversations in 401 club, or in Huntsville or even quick exchange of news during the brake time. What a remarkable Canadian, actually, what a remarkable man he was – open-minded, tolerant, wise and with a great sense of humour. I really enjoyed working in RCC, his brainchild. In and around 1986-88 Hartley invited me to join RCC College division and I very much enjoyed the next 20 years - especially the basement Christmas parties at 243 College and being included in the registrars' June golf and meeting getaways. He and Peggy even entrusted me with their 4 children for a week while they were in Vancouver. When the college moved to Vaughan, we would have picnics in the park what a great diversion for Friday lunch. Indeed a real gentlemen, great sense of humour and always, always found or looked for the upside of a situation; a very positive man. Many times while in the kitchen I would think of Hartley especially if I was cracking eggs and remember his eggs fubar. I am sure I will still have Hartley moments and that will be a good thing.

Hartley was one of my mentors right from the time we achieved the right to award diplomas in Ontario with college status back in May 1999. When I needed advice, both Hartley and Peggy were there for me, would take time to listen and then offer solutions in a very pragmatic way, often sharing similar situations from their college and how it worked for them. Hartley often would warn me about the little things to watch out for and what to do to correct them if they would ever come up. We have indeed lost a great visionary for the Private Career College sector and one who was not afraid to invest in achieving our very first degree granting program for the Private Career College sector, or to always lobby for our students and sector to be treated equally in the Ministry’s hierarchy. I have known Hartley and Peggy for over 50 years. Whether in private over one of Hartley's home made pizzas in his kitchen or in public he was a good business friend. We first got together in the basement of his King Street school when he formed the Private Career Education Council. Later on we worked together to form and develop the Canadian Education and Training Accreditation Commission. Hartley always seem to have the knack of balacing business with socializing making even the ardous projects enjoyable. Hartley's integrity coupled with his drive to improve not only his school but the industry made him very special and I will treasure my memories working with him over the years.I will miss him.

Hartley was always wonderful to me. At work, he made me feel like part of the RCC family and I always look back those early years at RCC with fond memories. Apples on Fridays and the tomato sandwiches brought people together. He always brought a laugh to a room and saw something positive in tough situations. Sorry for your loss. Katherine Benjamin
